Since I recently wrote about drinking water, I thought I’d share a free book on the topic. While our drinking water in the United States isn’t perfect, it is so much better than in other parts of the world. Unfortunately, that makes it easy to overlook a larger problem.

Did you know that:

1 out of 6 people in the world don’t have access to clean water

1.8 million children die annually from water-borne diseases

2/3 of the world’s population will suffer from water shortages by 2025

These are just a few of the facts from the book, Blue Planet Run. This coffee table book has amazing photographs and educational information. If you want a printed copy, it costs $30. However, right now, amazon.com has the electronic pdf version available for download at no cost. Click here or on the book title below the image and then look for the section with the free download link.

One last quote from the book:

Many people in the developed world still assume the global water crisis has nothing to do with them — that it’s a crisis for “those poor people, over there.” The painful truth is the water crisis is now on every continent and in cities large and small. The water crisis affects every human being on the planet, but most of us just aren’t paying attention yet.

Do you know what’s in your drinking water? We receive reports from our township periodically and everything is within normal range. What worries me now is what might be in water that we aren’t testing for? How much of these things are in the water? How much does it take to affect our health? While the reports say that the concentrations are low – parts per million or even trillion – they also admit that these low concentrations are enough to do some damage:

While the comprehensive risks are still unclear, researchers are finding evidence that even extremely diluted concentrations of pharmaceutical residues harm fish, frogs and other aquatic species in the wild and impair the workings of human cells in the laboratory.

So what is in the water? It’s drug residues such as cholesterol medication, nicotine derivatives, tranquilizers and hormones. Where has it been detected? So far, most municipalities haven’t tested their water. Of those that have, issues have arisen in cities within Nevada, Georgia, Colorado, Alabama and Illinois. New York City refuses to test its water! I would like to see more testing done, but I think it also needs to come along with a plan to improve the situation.
